Meerkats are highly sociable, burrow-dwelling mammals, mainly inhabiting the open grasslands, deserts and savannas of southern Africa. Most well known for the black patches around their eyes and standing on their two back legs, meerkats are highly vigilant animals, consistently alert for predators and danger around them. They are opportunistic foragers, with a diverse omnivorous diet, feeding on both plants and animals.

In our five-day unit plan, designed specifically for elementary-aged students, children can delve deeper into the world of meerkats, investigating their physical characteristics, their African habitats and what they need to survive, their omnivorous diets, how they utilize teamwork to thrive in their environment, and their unique ways of protecting themselves from danger.

Included in the unit plan are five days’ worth of engaging daily lesson plans, instructional materials, printable worksheets, graphic organizers, comprehension questions, children’s books, educational video suggestions, writing templates and more!
