Anne Hathaway Goes Gothic
Anne Hathaway turned to one of Iris Van Herpen‘s early 2020s designs for Thursday night’s red carpet screening of her new film “Mother Mary” in London.
The Oscar-winning actress turned to the Dutch label’s spring 2020 couture collection, which debuted as part of Paris Couture Week in January 2020. Largely inspired by “neuroscience illustration and deep-sea marine organisms,” per Lily Templeton’s WWD review of the collection, the Gothic look was strewn with black fabric and intricate lines that effectively channeled neural pathways.

Hints of Gothic, subdued style were incorporated as well, with black fabric set against a sheer base to provide contrast and intrigue in equal measure. The sleeves of the dress were long and billowing, complementing the flowing skirt.
Van Herpen’s “Sensory Sea” collection featured “two, intertwined references: hydrozoa, delicate deep-sea organisms that lent their wispy tendrils to her dresses, and the illustrations of Spanish neuroscientist and pathologist Santiago Ramón y Cajal,” per Templeton’s review.

Hathaway further augmented the dress with a pair of black pumps by Aquazzura in a black tone with lattice-style work. As for accessories, Hathaway favored simple pieces by Bulgari, for which she serves as a global ambassador and past campaign star.
Erin Walsh, who’s collaborated with Hathaway on her “Mother Mary” and “The Devil Wears Prada 2” press tour wardrobe, styled the actress’ look. Walsh’s visual language for Hathaway’s “Mother Mary” wardrobe compared to her “The Devil Wears Prada 2” style has offered a striking contrast.

Channeling elements of the David Lowery-directed film’s psychological drama themes, Hathaway’s “Mother Mary” wardrobe has consisted of dark whimsical elements. Press tour selections have also evoked a type of ethereal pop star visual language, favoring method dressing moments inspired by “Mother Mary,” the title character Hathaway plays in the film.
Now in theaters, “Mother Mary” follows the titular pop star who reunites with her former costume designer and friend, played by Michaela Coel, on the eve of her comeback performance.
