Celebrating first night of Hanukkah in Wilkes-Barre

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Wednesday marked the first night of Hanukkah, the Jewish holiday celebrating a historic victory of light over darkness.

At Wednesday’s 48th Annual Christmas Together event in Luzerne County, members of nearby Temple Israel Wilkes-Barre gathered to play music for guests to enjoy.

They played a variety of traditional Jewish songs.

Jewish leaders say they attend Christmas Together every year.

“It’s a lot of fun and it brings light and happiness and joy and all that kinda good stuff,” said Temple Israel Rabbi Larry Kaplan.

It’s only the fifth time within the last 114 years that Christmas and the first day of Hanukkah have overlapped.
