Germany’s Deutsche Welle broadcaster to welcome new editor-in-chief

Germany’s Deutsche Welle (DW) is to be led by a new editor-in-chief from January, the state-funded international broadcaster said on Monday.

Mathias Stamm is to replace Manuela Kasper-Claridge, who is retiring after 30 years at DW and five years as editor-in-chief.

The 43-year-old Stamm has been at DW since 2008 and is currently leading the broadcaster’s strategic reorganization.

Deutsche Welle is funded by the German state but operates independently of the government.

Unlike the ARD, ZDF and Deutschlandradio broadcasters, the organization is not financed by a licence fee, but directly by tax revenue.

According to DW, the company had around 4,000 employees from more than 140 nations in 2024.

Its German offices are in Bonn and Berlin.
