Macron attends ceremony for 80th anniversary of Colmar’s liberation

The 80th anniversary of the last major battle of World War II on French soil was commemorated on Sunday, as French President Emmanuel Macron and others celebrated the liberation of Colmar from German occupation with a memorial service.

The ceremony in the Alsatian city, which included a military parade, was attended by some 300 French and US soldiers. Macron did not make a speech, but did lay a wreath during the ceremony.

The liberation of Colmar marked the final stage of the Alsace campaign, which took place between November 1944 and February 1945.

A few months ago, Macron took part in a commemorative ceremony in the Alsatian capital Strasbourg, which was liberated on November 23, 1944.
