Taylor Swift’s Vintage Otter T-shirt Went Viral — Now It’s Helping Real Sea Otters at the Monterey Bay Aquarium


The Monterey Bay Aquarium is benefiting from the Taylor Swift effect.

The singer was seen wearing a vintage T-shirt from the aquarium while promoting her latest album, “The Life of a Showgirl.” As is often the case with everything surrounding Swift’s name, the T-shirt featuring a graphic illustration of otters went viral on social media. Her fans started donating $13 — Swift’s favorite number — to the Monterey Bay Aquarium to show their appreciation for the singer. Now, the organization is rereleasing the vintage T-shirt to support its Sea Otter Program and other critical ocean conservation work.

According to the organization, fans can purchase the reissued T-shirt for a limited time by donating at least $65.13 to its program. Donations can be made online at montereybayaquarium.org.

The original otter T-shirt was first printed in the 1990s by Harborside Graphics. For the rerelease, the aquarium is partnering with Liberty Graphics, “which uses PVC-free, water-based ink that’s better for the planet and our ocean and 100 percent cotton material that doesn’t shed microplastics in the wash,” the organization said in a statement. Contributors who donate a minimum of $65.13 have the option to receive the shirt as a token of appreciation.

The Monterey Bay Aquarium has rescued, raised and released more than 1,000 sea otters since the 1980s.

“Our work with this threatened species has been central to the Aquarium’s identity and mission, even before we opened in 1984. Since then, we’ve educated the public with our Sea Otters exhibit and collaborated on research and rehabilitation efforts. Together, we’ve made progress in restoring southern sea otter populations. And yet, there is still much work to be done,” the organization says on its website.

The Life of a Showgirl” is Swift’s 12th studio album and was released on Oct. 3 through Republic Records.
