A German tourist was fatally bitten by a snake while on vacation with his family in Egypt, according to reports.
Earlier this month, the 57-year-old man who has not been identified was at a snake-charming show at a hotel in Hurghada, according to the Agence France-Presse.
The man, from the Unterallgäu region of Germany, was on vacation with two other family members along the Red Sea coast, the Bavarian Police confirmed to CNN on Monday, April 27.
The resort put on a snake show for guests during their vacation, CNN reported. The performance involved two snakes identified as cobras.
The snake charmer went around the audience, letting event-goers handle the snakes and even drape them around their necks, police told CNN.
During the show, one of the snakes allegedly slithered into the victim’s pants, eventually biting him in the leg, according to the report.
The man showed evident signs of poisoning and had to be resuscitated before being taken to the hospital, where he eventually died, AFP reported. He has not been identified at this time.
The results of a toxicological examination are pending, according to CNN.
According to the World Health Organization, around 81,000 to 138,000 people die globally from snakebites.
